Antony Price, the groundbreaking style architect responsible for some of the most iconic looks worn by musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has died aged 80.

Price was best known for his defined forms and dramatic aesthetics, most notably the light-hued ensembles that featured in the pop-rock group Duran Duran's seminal music video for "the song Rio".

"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance online."

Price's death comes less than a month after he debuted his latest collection in London, his first in more than 30 years. Artist Lily Allen showcased a dress that paid homage to the famous black velvet "dress" once worn by Diana, Princess of Wales.

A Lasting Legacy

A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price relocated to London during the sixties to enroll at the renowned Royal College of Art.

A year after graduating, he began designing men's fashion at the company Stirling Copper and was behind the form-fitting, button-fly pants that Sir Mick Jagger sported during the band's Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.

He founded his own label in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show featured as its opener creations worn by model Jerry Hall, who later wore the marriage dress Price specifically designed for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.

Collaborations with Icons

A frequent collaborator of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price designed the distinctive jacket the singer wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His trademark skill to fuse menswear and womenswear along with his expert craftsmanship in shaping body-hugging looks established him as a "true original," according to the UK's fashion authority.

In the 1990s, he commenced designing ensembles for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, including a number of outfits for her tour of the United States after assuming the title.

Following a profession lasting more than five decades, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London recently in conjunction with the label 16Arlington.

  • Architectural Forms: The core of his aesthetic.
  • Dramatic Impact: Influencing music videos and stagewear.
  • Boundary-Pushing Tailoring: Blurring lines between clothing for men and women.
  • Clients from Stage to Palace: Spanning iconic musicians and members of the royal family.

The industry mourns the loss to a authentic original whose legacy on fashion and music remains deeply ingrained.
