Two individuals have been detained as part of an investigation into the illegal deposit of many thousands of tonnes of waste in a field in Oxfordshire. Officials stated that a 69-year-old was detained at a dwelling in Andover, Hampshire, while a 54-year-old was detained in Slough, Berkshire in connection with the huge pile of garbage dumped near the area of Kidlington. These arrests follow a prior investigation which exposed the operation of more than 500 unlawful dumps across the country of England, featuring at least 11 so-called "super sites" larger than 20,000 tons. A representative for the regulatory agency said that the arrests were for environment-related and financial crimes and were a "vital step" in active investigations. The two individuals have been set free on conditional release. The suspects were arrested in connection with money-laundering and environment-related crimes. Scale of the Issue The dump in Kidlington, situated between the Cherwell River and the A34 road, is thought to hold approximately 21,000 tonnes of rubbish in a heap which is up to 150m (490ft) long and 6m (20ft) high. The arrests were executed on a recent Thursday by personnel from a regional organised crime team and come after an earlier arrest of a 39-year-old from the Surrey region in last November. He was set free awaiting more enquiries.
