International Committee of the Red Cross Assists Militant Group in Recovery for Remains of Israeli Hostages in Gaza

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) confirmed that its representatives joined members of Hamas into zones of Gaza still under IDF control to facilitate the hunt for the bodies of individuals held captive.

Ceasefire Terms and Hostage Bodies Return

As part of the truce negotiated by the United States, which took effect on 10 October, Hamas is obligated to hand over the bodies of all captives as soon as possible. In exchange, the Israeli government has consented to hand over 15 Palestinian bodies for every Israeli body returned.

Hamas has so far returned the bodies of fifteen of those held captive but none in the past five days, as a portion of those bodies are thought to be in locations past the ceasefire boundary marking the temporary truce line.

Red Cross Role as Impartial Facilitator

“Upon the appeal of the involved sides, the Red Cross joined a party to the conflict as the party searched for the bodies of the deceased past the military-established ‘yellow line’,” said a representative for the organization.

She continued: “Those involved to the hostilities determined the modalities of the operation and delegated the ICRC to serve as a neutral intermediary. The ICRC was had no part in the discussions.”

She additionally explained: “The ICRC was not involved in the search for the bodies nor does it take part in the physical recovery of human remains.”

International Humanitarian Law and Responsibilities

According to international humanitarian law, it is the duty of the sides engaged in a conflict to locate, gather, and recover human remains.

US Ultimatum and Local Search Efforts

Recently, the American leader delivered a two-day demand to the organization. “They is going to have to start returning the remains of the deceased hostages, which include American citizens, quickly, or the other countries involved in this great peace will intervene,” he posted on his social‑media platform.

When the 48-hour deadline neared, Hamas, joined by the Red Cross, joined teams from Egypt, who were authorised by Israeli authorities to look for remains beyond the line marking the Israeli military’s pullback inside the territory. An Israeli spokesperson said the Egyptian team would use heavy machinery and vehicles in the operation.

Authoritative Verification and Media Reports

The news was supported by an unnamed Israeli official, who told Hebrew-language media that members of the group had been allowed to enter areas of Gaza under military authority to search for the bodies of captives, alongside Egyptian and ICRC personnel.

“To achieve this goal, Hamas members were permitted to cross the designated boundary,” the source was quoted as saying.

Video released by a media outlet seemed to show individuals of a Hamas unit – part of the group’s armed faction responsible for guarding captives – accompanying a humanitarian transport in a specific location close to Rafah, which is beyond IDF jurisdiction.

Difficulties in Locating Hostage Bodies

The search for the remains of Israeli hostages has turned into one of the most sensitive matters in the truce agreed between the parties. However, the effort to locate the bodies has proved challenging from the beginning, given the presence of an approximate enormous amount of rubble across the strip, where, according to local health authorities, at least 10,000 residents are recorded as unaccounted for, trapped under the rubble.

Diverging Claims on Body Whereabouts

Hamas has stated it does not know the exact locations of all the remains, saying it has lost contact with a number of its teams that had been holding the hostages and were reportedly eliminated during military strikes.

In contrast, an Israeli government spokesperson claimed that Hamas was aware of the locations of the remains. “Should the group exerted greater effort, they would be able to retrieve the bodies of our captives,” the official said.

US Position and Weapons Surrender Discussions

While the US president has conceded that some of the bodies are difficult to reach, he said that “others they can return immediately and, for unknown reasons, they are not.”

“This could be related to the disarming of Hamas,” he noted.

The US administration has said it has received assurances from the organization that the group will surrender its arms, though no clear timeline has been established. They remains reluctant to surrender its weapons without solid assurances about the fate of its members.
