The beloved police drama AC-12 is officially returning for its 7th installment, confirmed by the BBC.

An upcoming six-part series written by the show's creator will begin filming in Northern Ireland this spring, as confirmed by the production team.

Vicky McClure shared her enthusiasm about the return, stating she was "thrilled" about the series' return. Adrian Dunbar remarked, "What a joy it is to know that the main trio will be back filming together soon."

The previous series wrapped up in 2021 with a final episode that drew in over 17 million viewers. Rumors about a potential return have been widespread ever since, but confirmation only came this week.

Fresh Obstacles for The Team

The seventh season begins with the anti-corruption unit having been disbanded and renamed as the Inspectorate of Police Standards, according to production details.

Steve Arnott, Vicky McClure's role, and Adrian Dunbar's part continue tasked to tackle corruption within the law enforcement.

Their work "faces unprecedented challenges", and in this climate, these officers will take on their "most sensitive case so far."

New Character and Intricate Plot

An additional officer, Det Insp Dominic Gough, described as a charismatic officer celebrated for takedowns of criminal networks, faces allegations of abusing his position to act as a sexual predator.

Yet, his case might serve as a deliberate distraction from a bigger threat still active in the shadows, plot details suggested.

In a statement, the creator said: "All cast and crew feels enormous gratitude to the show's fans."

"We're privileged to have had so many fans watch the developments of the unit over multiple series and we couldn't be more delighted to be coming back for a seventh season."

Mercurio continued: "Corruption in the UK was thought to be over while Line of Duty was not airing, so I've been forced to use my creativity."

Actor Responses

The Scottish actor described being part of the police drama as "a job of a lifetime".

"Beyond the show's success but the people I've worked with I now call dear friends."

"I can't wait to wear the uniform again and reunite with everyone," he said.

The Nottingham-born actress stated: "It goes without saying I'm very happy the show is returning! Can't wait to work with the creator, Compston and Dunbar again. Belfast, we'll see you soon!"

Adrian Dunbar commented: "While anticipating the AC-12 return, how exciting it is to know that the central trio will be working together soon."

"Delighted with the announcement and anticipating those unexpected plot developments."

Show History

The drama launched in the early 2010s and evolved into a highly successful television series of the past ten years, featuring notable actors such as Stephen Graham.

The BBC has not yet announced when the new season will premiere.

The finale of season six drew the extended plot about the hunt for kingpin known as "H" to a close, and the creative team said at the time there were no plans for additional seasons.

However, the corporation announced on this week that a seventh series is now in development.
