Diplomatic Moves and International Reactions

A former American diplomat, Dan Fried, observed, "The Russian leader is trying to disrupt the progress toward greater pressure on Russia." He added, "The outcome will become clear tomorrow, but the chances of moving toward a ceasefire by pushing Moscow to get serious seem to have decreased."

This development followed the US president had recently been hardening his rhetoric toward Moscow until Thursday's call with Putin, which the Russian government characterized as "extremely frank and trustful."

European Energy Restrictions and Market Impact

EU authorities have established a requirement for fuel suppliers into the EU to prove their products are not made from Russian oil, as stated in a document released on recently. This measure is included in the European Union's upcoming prohibition on purchases of fuels made from Russian crude, which forms part of its 18th sanctions package against Russia over its military actions in Ukraine.

Market analysts noted that investment patterns appeared to be factoring in the possible end of Indian purchases of Russian oil. Some oil processors in India are preparing to cut Russian oil imports, with expectations of a phased decrease, as reported by sources knowledgeable about the situation.

"This represents a positive development for the oil market as it would eliminate a major customer of Russian crude," commented Tony Sycamore, noting that oil prices were steady on Thursday.

Military Developments and Energy Strikes

A large-scale Moscow's unmanned aircraft and missile attack targeted energy infrastructure in Ukraine's eastern regions on Thursday, resulting in outages in multiple regions. Ukrainian officials stated that Russia deployed hundreds of unmanned vehicles and dozens of missiles, along with aerial munitions.

"During this fall, the Russians use daily opportunities to strike at our power facilities," declared Volodymyr Zelenskyy, adding that strikes affected the regions of northern Ukraine, eastern Ukraine, central Ukraine, northeastern Ukraine and Vinnytsia.

Global Political Reactions

Kyiv's envoy to the United States, the Ukrainian ambassador, asserted that Moscow demonstrated its true attitude to negotiations through the "terror" of such strikes. "Russia once again opted for missiles over talks, making this attack into a direct setback to current peace efforts," Stefanishyna commented.

Meanwhile, the European Union's top diplomat, the bloc's representative, announced that the European Union had no choice but to build up anti-drone defences against Russian threats. She revealed a "plan" to prepare for potential conflict by 2030, featuring a new anti-drone system to be fully operational by the end of 2027.

The proposed system, called the "European drone defence initiative," is expected to start operations in its first phase by the end of 2026 and be completely operational by the following year. Brussels hopes to obtain the support of EU leaders at a summit next week.
